Garage Door Insulation Helps Keep Costs Down

Heating and cooling bills eat up your budget if you don't take some time to insulate your home, including your garage. If your garage is an attached garage, it will be very important that you have garage door insulation. This temperature regulation will keep all your heat inside the house along the wall where the garage is from escaping right out the door each time the door to the garage from the house is opened. Garage door insulation helps keep utility costs down.

Home improvement stores carry kits that are to provide the home owner with all they need in order to insulate their garage door. These kits are pretty easy to use. Here are some tips that will give you some information that you may not have had before that will help you keep costs down.

  • The inside of the garage door will have some cavity depression areas inside the metal garage door. Insulation comes in various sizes; find the size that is closest to what you will need to fill the panels. Insulation with a higher R-value is what you are looking for in order to have insulation that does the job as it should be done.
  • Cut the insulation about 1/4 inch to a 1/2 inch wider than what you will need. This will help to create an air tight seal.
  • Spray foam insulation from a spray can around the edge of the insulation pieces. Let this set for about an hour. Trim off the excess hardened foam. Tape the edge of the insulation to make it totally air tight. Replace the inside panel cover and your garage door is now insulated.

Here are a few safety tips that you will need to keep in mind after your garage door is insulated. The door will be heavier and you may need to recalibrate your automatic garage door opener. Most units come with instructions from the manufacturer that instructs you how to recalibrate your garage door.

The added insulation will cut down on fuel costs inside your house because many of the draft and air leaks have been stopped with the garage door insulation. If your garage is also used as your laundry area, it will save money when you dry clothes because the dryer will not have to heat up as much. The insulation will keep the garage warmer so that each time the door to the inside of the house is opened the heat from inside does not pour out into the garage. This alone cuts down on the heating bills, and any relief and savings families can find helps with the bottom line of the cost of supporting a family.

Garage door insulation will cut down on street noise. If you live in a metropolitan area and the traffic is quite loud at all hours of day and night, a benefit to insulating your garage door very well is the noise is muffled and reduced inside the house when the garage door is attached to the house. This particular side of the house will be much quieter than the other three outside walls of the house.
